To Grow Together

We’ve just entered the second week of our shore drive campaign. The church has prepared colorful flyers for you so that you can bring them to invite your neighbors and friends to join us. The deadline for collecting shoes from people outside the church is October 30.

The purpose of joining this shoe drive campaign is twofold. One is to encourage the whole church doing good work together and reaching out to our community. Another is to encourage each family to consider the campaign as a family activity. We encourage parents to bring their children knocking on your neighbors’ door or visiting your family and friends to invite them to join the campaign. Doing this will create opportunities to share the meaning of shoe drive and to discuss the biblical teaching on alms and helping the needy.

True devotion, the kind that is pure and faultless before God the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their difficulties and to keep the world from contaminating us. (James 1:27) CEV

Our Christian faith is not a bunch of noble doctrines and a hope for the future. Our faith emphasizes a lot in practice. Pure and faultless devotion does not come from outward appearance but actions and daily walk with the Lord. We can demonstrate Christ’s merciful heart by our acts of love. We can also refuse or stand against the negative influence of the world by the power of the Holy Spirit. Young people should learn from older folks on how to handle life issues while older folks should listen and try to understand what young people think and how they feel. Learning from one another will enable us to grow and become more like Christ.

It is my hope that Crosspointers across generations using different languages can gather together as a big family so that we can encourage one another and remind one another to grow, to worship, to serve and to witness as one body of Christ.

Build Up Our Spiritual Home

The Word of Chiu

We finished our VBS at Milpitas Campus last week. A total of 116 kids registered with about 80 workers helping in different tasks. We thank God that 9 children accepted Christ. What comforted me most was seeing former VBS students had grown up and became helpers and even the leaders of the VBS. Another thing that made me really happy was to witness the maturity of the teenagers who took initiation to greet me when we met instead of running away from me. My interpretation is that these young people have considered Crosspoint Church as their spiritual home and they look at me as their pastor as well!

Before and after last Sunday worship, I met a few college students who came back for Summer break. I still remember their faces when they were small but now, they have become beautiful young ladies and handsome young men. Some are going to graduate from college soon. They are the future hope of the church and I pray that our Father in Heaven will help them guard their heart and let them experience His presence and guidance all the time. I pray that their faith will grow stronger that they are not only valuable access to our society but a new force to expand the Kingdom of God spreading the Good News of Christ everywhere.

The VBS and Sports Camp at our Pleasanton Campus will be on July 22-26. Due to the limitation of space, we can only take 60 students. However, the summer camp of Joyful Kids Club had already started. We plan to enroll 50-60 students in the fall. May I ask you to pray for the preparation, leaders, and helpers.

Paul encourages us: Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. (Romans 12:11-12) ESV

My brothers and sisters in Christ, let us join hand to build up our spiritual home and expand the kingdom of our Father in Heaven so that His name will be glorified through us. Amen.

Shepherd Flocks

Praise to God that we harvested 2 “ fruits” from our Tracy Campus last Sunday. Two new visitors accepted Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Please pray for their new found faith in Jesus will continue to grow. Our Peninsula Campus will be officially opened on April 17th. Let’s ask God to bless this new work as well that many seekers and Christians in the area will be drawn to build up the church and bear fruits for the Lord.

As our ministry continues to expand, we need to call a few more pastoral staff to help lead and shepherd our congregations. Our staff and leaders had interviewed a few candidates in the previous months and I believe that we will share with you our decisions in the near future. Please pray that God will bring us the most fittest people to help developing the church.

A Parent asked one of the candidates last Sunday whether he would worry about the high cost of living in San Francisco Bay Area. The answer was as long as God confirms it is His will for bringing the family to Bay area, he won’t worry that God will mistreat him. Also, he shared that his wife has been his great supporter. She declined promotion from her work so that she could have more time and energy to help her husband’s ministry. He believes that his wife probably could get a job here in Bay Area.

I praise and thank God for the faith of this candidate. The question however stimulated me to think that it should not be a question posted to the candidate, but to the church leaders and members of the church. We should seriously contemplate on how should we compensate our staff so that they do not need to worry about living but focus on their call to ministry and shepherd their flocks.

From the very beginning of my faith in Jesus till now, I have experienced and witnessed how true the Bible is in its teachings. If everyone who considers Crosspoint as their spiritual home and commits to give their tithe, Our God in Heaven will open the floodgate from Heaven and pour out blessings to us. We surely will have more than enough to provide the needs of our pastoral staff and let them enjoy a similar lifestyle of the majority of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Mission of Being Alive

Dear Crosspointers, some of you may know that I passed out Sunday night and was admitted to Kaiser Hospital. I didn’t know what I hit when I fell down. I got a bruise on my chest and 4 stitches on my chin. I had to stay at the hospital under 24 hour observation. The doctor couldn’t find out what was wrong and sent me home Tuesday afternoon. I should be alright but I was advised not to drive and to rest for a few days.

I experienced once again the unpredictability of life. Thanks to the Lord that we know Him well and understand that everything falls into His plan for us. Pastor Matt got the flu and has been coughing for about a month. He is still recovering while my two grandchildren are taking turns getting sick. My wife, while help taking care of them, got sick as well. Our situation adds burden on Sarah, my daughter in law. All these happenings made me remember a few years back when all my family members including my daughter in law got into car accidents in the same year. Some brothers and sisters in Christ said that it was an attack from the Devil because we were working really hard for the Lord.

My wife and I did not think about whether it was an attack from the Devil or not. No matter if it was or it was not, we know that God has been watching over us. It is like the story of Job. God allowed the Devil to cause whatever suffering he wanted to inflict on Job, except take his life. I praise and thank God that I am still alive and able to share my experience with you to encourage you.

I believe God allows us to live because we have not finished His task on earth that he has assigned to each of us. Some of us are able to follow, some of us may still be thinking of our own desires, and some of us may still be searching. No matter what, “God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing.” (Ephesians 2:10) NCV

The two small copper coins

————————

Last Monday, I got an email from a church member telling me that she and her husband had to withdraw money from their 401K to handle their short-term financial hardship. What moved me most was their faithfulness to the Lord by giving their tithe through our online system, a more than $7,700 giving including convenience fee.

I want Crosspointers to know that our God indeed has been blessing our church and brothers and sisters in Christ in many ways. Yet it doesn’t mean that we do not have anyone who is under all kind of problems and hardship. In fact, we can tell by the overwhelming response of our brothers and sisters to the marriage and family workshops and seminars. The emotional classes taught by Dr. Kot and her
associates also were very well received. Our brothers and sisters in Christ are facing challenges from marriage, family, and life every day. I believe that some of these happenings are trials from God that He wants to put our faith and love to Him in test. I know that many of our brothers and sisters are waiting for God’s delivery and guidance. However, it is rare to see brothers and sisters who act like this couple who gave their tithe faithfully to the kingdom ministry even in such financial hardship.

I remember in Jesus’ time, there was a poor widow who put in two small copper coins. And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” (Luke 21:2-4)

Together

On 11/17, we had our annual leadership rally and at the same time, recognized the contribution from our church leaders who have partnered with God to serve at Crosspoint Church.

The pastoral staff and leaders from various ministries have been working diligently to plan and budget for the ministry in the coming year. We hope that we can share with you the week before our membership meeting on 12/9 our plan and budget for the coming year. We hope that you will have more time to understand and pray for the plan so that we can continue to expand God’s kingdom on earth together.

In the vision sharing gathering on Sunday, 12/2 (one week before membership meeting), we will focus our sharing on the progress of starting new campuses in South San Francisco Peninsula and Tracy. We will also share with you the prospect and challenge of starting a preschool in Pleasanton. In order to facilitate the development of our church, we also plan to change the time for our worship services beginning with next year. 2019 is going to be an exciting year to Crosspointers!

We are testing out the possibility of direct live streaming so that for those who cannot show up in person can join us through their computer or smartphone and ask questions. May I ask you to pray for the preparation work and make an effort to attend the meeting.

And day by day, Christians in the early church attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:46-47)

God Has Provided

Last Thursday, my wife and I went to participate in the Bible study held at brother Anders’ home in Tracy at noon time. I was amazed that there were about 20 people attending the meeting. After the Bible study, we went out to look for a possible venue for our future weekly service. Praise to the Lord that we found the Grand Theater in the city center which might be possible for us to use on Sunday and the rent is very affordable. We were thrilled for God’s leadership and provision and we plan to have another vision casting meeting on 10/21 and see whether it will be possible for us to start the weekly service by next March. Right now, the Tracy group is diligently preparing a music event with the help of the brothers and sisters from our main campus.

Our mission project in the San Francisco Peninsula also received enormous support from our brothers and sisters in Christ. Around 70 people showed up at the vision sharing gathering and around 10 had signed up to pick up the challenge. In fact, a few of them had begun to attend the meetings and gathering of Zeo group. Praise the Lord!

Besides, we had 19 youth promoted to our youth fellowship this new semester. We have about 40 youth attending our Sunday afternoon life groups. Pastor Matt has already divided them into 5 ministry teams and each team has an adult advisor to lead and teach them serving the Lord along with other adults. Pastor Ai Ling also will prepare a weekly family activity to help parents and their kids reflect on what they learn on Sun-day in a fun way. Now, we are still looking for about 10 more mentors to help care of our youth and take them out for lunch once a month. If you are able to help or you want to find out more, please contact Pastor Matt.

I praise and thank God for providing and arranging different opportunities for Crosspointers to get involved in kingdom ministry and building up faith in our youngster’s life. Let’s join hands and work together to develop our spiritual home bringing glory to God!

Stand Firm

God is not looking for successful servants to serve Him, but faithful ones.

This past week, our pastoral staff attended the bi-annual conference of Chinese Baptist Association of US and Canada. Dr. Daniel Brock was the keynote speaker helping pastors learning to preach from the book of Ezekiel. There were other workshops as well and participants were well fed spiritually.

I got a cold at the conference yet I was able to fellowship with some pastors whom I seldom see. Two of them consider me as their spiritual mentor and they shared with me their struggles and challenges in ministry. One of them had been forced to leave his church and another one felt that he had no more energy to move forward. I also learned that there were ministers who were seriously depressed and have been receiving counseling treatment. Another pastor told me that his church had shut down their English ministry and another pastor said that all his English speaking people were gone. What I could do was to use Dr. Brock’s sharing to encourage them: God is not looking for successful servants to serve Him, but faithful ones. I am thankful for the perseverance of these pastor friends yet I feel sad to learn about their struggles and pain.

My Father in Heaven, I thank and praise you for your protection and watching over your servants. You don’t allow them to quit from ministry due to difficulties and failure. My Father in Heaven, I thank and praise you for providing them with such an opportunity to rest and rejuvenate their energy to serve you. O My Father in Heaven, I ask you to give them and their spouse double portions of your grace at the time of their struggles. I ask you to make them aware that you have never left them. Please add them the double strength and give them the courage to stand firm and win the spiritual warfare. Amen.

Last Sunday, I listened to three different young people to share their short-term mission experience in New York and was convinced that they indeed have the ability to serve God like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah and reflect the light of the Lord in a foreign land.

It has been my prayer that many more young people can step up to give witness about Christ and serve God along with other adults. I would like to see many more young people could use their gifts and talents to help build up our church and serve people in our community. We need to give them opportunities. We also need to teach them to love God and love people and to experience God themselves.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (Deuteronomy 6:4-7) ESV

May I encourage our parents, elderlies, and mentors of our young people to share and discuss issues of life and faith at church and in particular at home with children and young people as well. Teach them how to live with people and do things God’s way like what the Israelites do in those days. This is the parents’ obligation from God and we should not rely on others to do it. By doing this, we can grow together and accomplish what God has commissioned us to do on earth seeing God grace and power with our own eyes.

Pastor Tim Keller

This morning, uncle David from the church office shared a few familiar Bible verses: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (John 3:16-18)

Uncle David said these few Bible verses give us not only the hope of salvation but also the strength to live on. We as Christians live on earth are not to survive or feed our family, but to save people from God’s damnation. God said: For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live. (Ezekiel 18:32)

Why do we need to plant new churches? Pastor Tim Keller gave us 4 reasons: (1) We want to be true to the biblical mandate spreading the Good News to all nations. (2) We want to be true to the Great Commission making disciples from all walks of life across generations. (3) We want to continually renew the whole body of Christ by fostering a spiritual metabolism. (4) We want to practice kingdom-mindedness so that we may learn to pay attention to the needs and development of God’s kingdom.

Pastor Tim Keller said: New church planting is the only way that we can be sure we are going to increase the number of believers in a city and one of the best ways to renew the whole body of Christ. The evidence for this statement is strong–Biblically, sociologically, and historically. In the end, a lack of kingdom-mindedness may simply blind us to all this evidence. We must beware of that.
